The History of ALGWA

The Australian Local Government Women's Association (ALGWA) was created as a National Association in 1951 during the Jubilee Year of the Commonwealth of Australia.

After the first National Convention held in Canberra in October 1966 a National Board was elected and a constitution drawn up.

In 1952 Councillor Violet Lambert of Fern Tree Gully Shire together with nine women Councillors formed the Victorian Women Councillor Committee. By 1963 the Branch constitution was in place and the emphasis was on the non party political base of the organisation and the membership which was open to all women interested in Local Government.

The Australian Local Government Women's Association Inc Victorian Branch celebrated 40 years of the Association in 2003 with a State Conference and Dinner held in the City of Whitehorse.
