ALGWA's Annual State Conference was held this year at Manningham Council in Doncaster, and we are very grateful for the co-operation of their CEO and officers in organising the event, and to McArthur's for their generous sponsorship. The Conference commenced with a reception and dinner on the evening of Thursday 19th April, where the Federal Minister for the Status of Women, Julie Collins, (pictured) gave the keynote address.  To read the full address Click here. To read a media release subsequently released, Click here

Victorian Minister for Local Government, Jeanette Powell, officially opened the Conference on Friday 20th April, and to read a media release summing up her speech Click here   Further details of the conference will appear in our next Newsletter.

The 2012 AGM was held immediately after the Conference, and details ofthe office bearers elected can be found on the Executive sub-heading of this webpage.

The North East Branch conducted a very successful Forum in November, encouraging women to both stand and re-nominate for the 2012 local government elections.  Further detail can be seen on the Sub-Branch section of this website.  A number of forums are being run throughout Victoria, both by us and other organisations.  Our Metropolitan Vice President, Cr Helen Coleman, is involved in one of these, on the 9th May 2012, at Nillumbik Council.  Click here for more details.

Warm congratulations to Cr. Yvonne Jennings, an ALGWA member, who was recently inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women, the citation recording that she is a significant contributor to community and regional organisations with an emphasis on education and leadership, particularly for youth and business.

Amara Hamid, the multi-cultural community development officer at Monash Council was also inducted.  The citation records her as being a passionate supporter of refugees and an advocate for women's leadership for culturally and linguistically diverse communities.  Amara was our Bursary Award winner in 2011.

The Australian Local Government Women's Association, Victorian Branch, held a joint celebration at the Box Hill Town Hall on Saturday 15th October 2011.

Firstly to celebrate and commemorate the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the National Board in Canberra on 15th October 1951.  Our guest speaker was Jane Nathan, a former Councillor, Mayor, and Commissioner, who has been involved in local government for many years.  We were thrilled to have Dr Morna Sturrock AM, National Secretary 1972-75 with us on the happy occasion, as well as a number of Life Members and former Presidents.

Our second pleasant duty was to announce the winner of the Annual Bursary Award.  We were honoured to have Anna Burke MP, Federal Member for Chisholm,  present a cheque and flowers to the winner, Ms Amara Hamid of the City of Monash Council.  Details and photos of the event appear in our December 2012 Newsletter, now online via the News sub-heading.

The Australian Honours Awards were announced recently, and once again women are in a minority of those honoured for their contribution to Australian life.  One of the reasons for this is the lack of nominations of women.  A new booklet gives details of how to nominate, and advice on how to maximize the chance of your nomination being a successful one.  Click here for a free download of the booklet.
