Mayor Lyn Gunter speaks at ALGA

The Australian Local Government Association’s National General Assembly held in Canberra during 21 – 24 June, heard first hand from Mayor Lyn Gunter about the impact of the Black Saturday bushfires on the Shire of Murrindindi.

Climate Change was one of the theme’s of this years National General Assembly.  Lyn shared the stage with a mayor from Northern Queensland who spoke of the floods in their part of the nation where much of the land was under water for months.

Lyn spoke clearly of the assistance that is being provided by the Shire and other levels of government as the community moves on from the fires. For some this is a time of assessing whether they will remain in the area. Murrindindi Shire was the local government area worst affected in a natural disaster that impacted 25 of the 79 local governments in Victoria.

Lyn says 'the Great Dividing Range runs through our Shire, with about 47% of our land mass being under the control of national or state parks. All levels of government are working together to get the best outcomes for all affected communities. On a personal level it has been a very challenging time and something the residents, shire staff and councillors will work through together'.
