In February 2008, Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) adopted a national strategy to advance women in local government into senior management positions. A key strategy is the development and promotion of a Year of Women in Local Government 2010.
In response to ALGWA’s findings in the Review of the National Framework for Women in Local Government- The Way Forward LGMA Board meeting considered the recommendations of its Women in Local Government Working Party and adopted a National Strategy.
The LGMA supports ALGWA in attracting the necessary resources and commitment to implement the findings of the review of the National Framework for Women in Local Government – The Way Forward and will adopt the Year of Women in Local Government as a basis for a national program that embraces the involvement of all local government professional peak bodies, LGMA Divisions, ALGWA and LGAs.
The year of Women in Local Government is aimed at raising the awareness of the need to increase the participation of women in local government particularly in management. To encourage Councils to establish targets to increase the participation of local government women in decision making roles, management and leadership training.
