The ALGWA has been awarded $250,000 as part of a package of $490,000 of initiatives announced by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport,Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese to assist the participation of women in local government. The money awarded to ALGWA to fund a 3 year awards program to audit councils and shires to determine the status and role of women in leadership roles as well as their participation in the workplace. The program will also accredit councils and shires as well as establish an awards program to recognise excellence. This is a direct result of ALGWA national work – 50:50 Vision: Councils for Gender Equity, which proposed the awards program. Other components of the $490,000 package will provide:

-  $100,000 in scholaship funding*
-  $100,000 for data collection and reporting
-  $40,000 for the LGMA for their 2010 Management Challenge

*to be developed by the new Australian Centre for Excellence for Local Goverment and ANZOG.
